Welcome to Upcountry
Rustic and dramatic, the high elevation of this area offers seclusion and epic sunrises.
Located on the higher elevations of Maui’s peak, Upcountry is considered the island’s heartland. Consisting of Kula, Pukalani, and Makawao, this area is responsible for most of Maui’s agriculture and features fertile ranch land tended by the Paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboys.
There are no beaches here, so this is the least touristy part of Maui, but many travelers still venture here for attractions like Haleakala National Park and Maui Wine, a scenic commercial vineyard where you can sample some of Maui’s local vintages.
Known for its cool air and lush greenery, this region is quiet and rural; homes here are usually situated on ample parcels of land. There are fruit and vegetable farms, many local markets and eateries, and an overall relaxing atmosphere.
